A Room with a View

The section A Room with a View maps the prolongation of places into consciousness. External topographies confound with fragile interiorities. The outside folds into the self. The psyche recesses into the hallways of the house. The house is a nest for imagining, a refuge for dreaming, a shelter for becoming. There is a house that contains us and a house that is contained in us.
The celluloid endures the continuum and ruptures between geometrical spaces and inhabited spaces - one space spills, is swallowed, is deformed and reformed by the other. With these five films of Peter Todd, one ought to accept solitude, to embrace, even if only momentarily, a wandering around enchanted rooms. Todd’s films demonstrate so tenderly that the space can be poetry.
Peter Todd is an English filmmaker and curator, often working on collaborative projects with other artists and filmmakers, whose films tenderly reveal experience as such, showing the inexhaustibly rich potentiality of everyday life. His cinema begins with the refusal of a position of knowledge of the world, with an abandonment of signification, in order to return to things in themselves—to brute perceptual experience—rediscovering a simple contact with lived time and lived spaces.
The filmwork of Peter Todd asks us to inhabit a particular attentiveness to the everyday, renewing our modes of being in immediacy and our ways of sharing presence with the inanimate, as entering these cinematic domains—an archive of domestic impressions and chance encounters with objects—means revisiting our direct engagement with the world and our responsiveness to the familiar.

Vom 27. - 31. Mai lädt FRACTO zu seiner neunten Ausgabe ins ACUD Kunsthaus in Berlin ein. Seit 2017 widmet sich das Festival dem avantgardistischen und experimentellen Film und schafft einen Raum für filmische Formen, die Wahrnehmung, Materialität und die Grenzen des Bildes erforschen.
Im Zentrum des diesjährigen Programms stehen 61 Filme aus Europa, Nord- und Südamerika sowie Asien, die sich zwischen Abstraktion, körperlicher Präsenz und filmischer Einschreibung bewegen. Die Werke eröffnen sinnliche Bildräume, in denen Licht, Bewegung und Materialität neue Formen des Sehens und Erfahrens ermöglichen.
Drei Fokusprogramme widmen sich KünstlerInnen, die das experimentelle Kino auf unterschiedliche Weise prägen: Die französische Filmemacherin Cécile Fontaine arbeitet mit Collage, Kratzungen, Überlagerungen und Found Footage und untersucht Film als physisches Material. Peter Todd richtet seinen Blick auf alltägliche Beobachtungen und entwickelt daraus ruhige, präzise Bildkonstellationen. Ein weiterer Fokus präsentiert restaurierte Arbeiten von Moucle Blackout, deren Filme durch Farbe, optische Transformation und materielle Prozesse eine besondere Position innerhalb der Avantgarde einnehmen.
Die Hauptsektion versammelt internationale Positionen zeitgenössischen experimentellen Films und bringt Arbeiten von KünstlerInnen aus unterschiedlichen filmischen und kulturellen Kontexten zusammen. Ergänzt wird das Programm durch die neue Reihe Experimental Film Treasures #1, die sich dem Langfilm im experimentellen Kino widmet und historische wie zeitgenössische Arbeiten miteinander in Beziehung setzt.
Abgerundet wird das Festival durch Workshops, Gespräche und Expanded-Cinema-Formate, die den Austausch zwischen Publikum und Filmschaffenden vertiefen. FRACTO verbindet dabei filmische Forschung, ästhetische Erfahrung und internationale Perspektiven zu einem Ort, an dem experimentelles Kino in seiner Vielfalt sichtbar wird.
