Goethe-Institut im Exil | Spotlight Sudan
Kurzfilm „Jamal”Seit 2023 befindet sich der Sudan in einem erneuten Kriegszustand, der das Land in eine der größten humanitären Krisen unserer Zeit stürzte, Millionen Sudanes*innen zur Flucht zwingt und die soziale und kulturelle Landschaft des Landes stark beeinträchtigt.
Aufgrund des eskalierenden Konflikts musste das Goethe-Institut im Sudan seine Präsenz in Khartum schließen. Es koordiniert nun seine kulturelle Arbeit von Kairo aus und setzt sie durch das Goethe-Institut im Exil fort.
Mit dem Film Spotlight Sudan präsentiert das Goethe-Institut im Exil drei sudanesische Filme aus unterschiedlichen Genres und zeigt vielfältige Perspektiven auf das Leben in einem von Konflikten und Widerstandsfähigkeit geprägten Land.

Im Anschluss an jede Filmvorführung findet ein Q&A mit sudanesischen Filmemacher*innen statt, die Einblicke in ihre Werke und die Herausforderungen des Filmschaffens in einem durch fortwährende Konflikte gefährdeten Umfeld geben.
Dokumentarfilm: Talking about Trees
Ibrahim, Soliman, Manar und Altayeb, sind seit 45 Jahren Cineasten und Freunde, voller Idealismus und Menschlichkeit. Nach Jahren des Exils kommen sie wieder zusammen, um sich endlich ihren alten Traum zu erfüllen und das Kino im islamischen und totalitären Sudan wiederzubeleben.
Sie wollen Spuren hinterlassen und den Menschen die Lust am Kino einhauchen. Ihre eigenen Filme, aber auch all die verlorengegangenen Bilder und die, die für immer nur eine Sehnsucht bleiben werden, offenbaren die schönen, aber auch erschreckenden Seiten ihres Landes.

Der Kurzfilm „Jamal“ berichtet aus dem Leben eines Kamels, das sich größtenteils in einem tristen, kleinen Raum abspielt – einer Sesammühle. Mit verbundenen Augen wird das Kamel von seinem Besitzer dazu getrieben im Kreis zu laufen. Nur kurz darf es sich im Hof entspannen, bevor das Kamel widerwillig zu seiner Arbeit in den dunklen Raum ohne Sonnenlicht zurückkehren muss.
Das Filmprogramm ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e. V. und dem Goethe-Institut im Exil.
Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführungen wird ein Q&A mit dem Filmemacher und Gründungsmitglied der Sudanese Film Group, Ibrahim Shaddad, stattfinden.

Plot: Since 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a renewed state of war, which has plunged the country into one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time, forcing millions of Sudanese to flee and severely affecting the country's social and cultural landscape. Due to the escalating conflict, the Goethe-Institut in Sudan had to close its presence in Khartoum. It is now coordinating its cultural work from Cairo and continuing it through the Goethe-Institut in Exile. With the Film Spotlight Sudan, the Goethe-Institut in Exile presents three Sudanese films from different genres and shows diverse perspectives on life in a country characterised by conflict and resilience. Each film screening will be followed by a Q&A with Sudanese filmmakers who will provide insights into their work and the challenges of filmmaking in an environment threatened by ongoing conflict. After spending years in exile, they have reunited to finally pursue their long-held dream of reviving cinema in Sudan, a country shaped by Islamic rule and totalitarianism. Their aim is to leave a lasting impact and rekindle a love for cinema among the people. Through their films, and the images that were lost or remain only as dreams, they capture both the beauty and the haunting realities of their homeland. Short film: Jamal Director & screenplay: Ibrahim Shaddad, Sudan, 1981, 14 min The short film “Jamal” is a report from the life of a camel, most of which plays out in a dreary, small room—a sesame mill. Blindfolded, the camel runs in circles, driven to do so by its owner. For a short while it is allowed to relax in the courtyard before it reluctantly returns to its work in the dark room without any sunlight. The film programme is a collaboration between Arsenal—Institute for Film and Video Art and the Goethe-Institut in Exile and will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker and funding member of the Sudanese Film Group Ibrahim Shaddad.
