Das lebhafte "Luxembourg, Luxembourg" des ukrainischen Regisseurs Antonio Lukich bietet eine bittersüße Flucht aus dem Alltag in einer Zeit des Krieges.
Die Geschichte dreht sich um Kolya und Vasya, identische Zwillinge, die sich in Lubny mit ihren gegensätzlichen Leben auseinandersetzen. The Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin 2023 will take place from October 25 to 29 with this year’s topic “No time like home”. With this motto we want to invite you to explore together the concept of "home", its spacial and temporal dimensions through Ukrainian cinema. The search for meanings of home as well as questions of one's own origin and belonging determine this year's festival program. Be it personal film stories of directors who fled the war and arrived in Berlin, or cinematic explorations of the 1990s in Ukraine, where most of the contemporary Ukrainian filmmakers grew up. This year we will present for the first time a retrospective program. In cooperation with the Dovzhenko-centre and the German DEFA-Stiftung we will show the Ukrainian Poetic Cinema of the 1960s.
Plot: There are many beautiful places to die. Luxembourg is not one of them. But beautiful or not, Luxembourg makes dying very expensive. When twin brothers hear that their long-absent father is sick in Luxembourg, they set out on a journey to see him one last time. Will the man they find be the badass father they remember? Vibrant "Luxembourg, Luxembourg" by Ukrainian director Antonio Lukich offers a bittersweet escape from a mundane life in a time of war. The story revolves around Kolya and Vasya, identical twins navigating their contrasting lives in Lubny. While Kolya is a scrappy drug dealer facing life's hardships, Vasya is in law enforcement with hopes for a better future. The film beautifully blends comedy and melancholic wisdom, revealing the complexities of familial bonds and the struggle for identity amidst absence. The eventual reunion of the brothers in Luxembourg leads to a subtly heartfelt resolution, making the film a vital, revivifying act of resistance through its sweet-natured humor and sincerity.
