The words of the Monster. Futuristic imagination in the cinema vs the colonial regime.
Ein kurzer Blick auf das Kino seit seinen Anfängen zeigt, wie entscheidend es für die Gestaltung des imaginären Verhältnisses zwischen dem globalen Norden und Süden, zwischen Männern und Frauen, Schwarz und Weiß, Vergangenheit und Zukunft, zwischen uns und den anderen war. Es wurde vergessen, dass das Kino eines der grundlegenden Werkzeuge des kolonialen Regimes war, es wurde zum idealen Instrument, um nicht-normative Menschen – wie uns – unsere Menschlichkeit vergessen zu lassen und es machte uns zu Monstern. Von diesem Ort aus, an welchen uns die Kolonialgeschichte bestimmt hat, begannen wir, die Monster, zu sprechen und seit kurzem auch gehört zu werden.
Aber wie spricht ein Monster? Welche Sprache verwenden wir Monster, um uns untereinander zu verständigen? Wie verstehen und erleben wir Zeit und Raum in unseren Erzählungen? Welche Vorstellungen entwickeln wir, um die Welt mit Würde zu bewohnen, selbst als Monster? Wie überleben die Worte des Monsters die verschlingende Natur des kolonialen Kapitalismus?
In diesem Gespräch werden wir stolz über und aus dieser Monstrosität heraus sprechen, ausgehend von den futuristischen Ideen und ästhetischen Aktionen von José Esteban Muñoz, Octavia Butler, Sarah Maldoror, Johan Mijail, Iki Yos, Sally Fenaux Barleycorn, Djibril Diop Membety, Gloria Anzaldúa, Sara Gómez und anderen.

Taking a quick look at the cinema since its foundation, it is very easy to see how decisive it was in shaping the imaginary of relationships between the global north and south, between men and women, black and white, past and future, between the Us and the Others. Being forgetfulness one of the fundamental tools of the colonial regime, the cinema emerged as the perfect instrument to make non-normative people forget our humanity and turned us into monsters. From that place to which colonial history destined us, we, the monsters, began to speak and, very recently, to be heard.
But how does a monster speak? What language do we monsters use to communicate among ourselves? How do we understand and experience time and space in our narratives? What imaginaries do we build to inhabit the world with dignity, even being monsters? How do the monster's words survive the devouring nature of colonial capitalism?
In this talk, we will speak proudly of and from that monstrosity, based on the futuristic ideas and aesthetic action of José Esteban Muñoz, Octavia Butler, Sarah Maldoror, Johan Mijail, Iki Yos, Sally Fenaux Barleycorn, Djibril Diop Membety, Gloria Anzaldúa, Sara Gómez, among others.
