On the 19th of February we focus our attention to Chile by presenting the documentary If You Listen Carefully (Si Escuchas Atentamente) by Nicolás Guzmán.

Vier Freund*innen leben ihre Jugend zwischen Autobahnen und Weiden am Rande der Stadt. Gegen Ende der Schulzeit stellt sich ihnen die Frage, was sie in Zukunft tun werden? Für sie birgt das Leben keine Geheimnisse. In einer Stadt, die sie zwischen den Bergen und den Bahngleisen einzwängt und in einer Schule, an der sie nichts lernen. Die Tage ziehen vorbei, ebenso wie die Projekte, die sie vielleicht haben. Die Jugendlichen warten darauf, dass der Unterricht zu Ende geht damit sie sich mit ihren Freund*innen treffen können um gemeinsam der Ankunft in einer ungewissen Zukunft zu harren.
Über den Regisseur
Nicolás Guzmán ist Filmemacher mit einem Master in Bildender Kunst von der Universität zu Chile. Sein Debütfilm If You Listen Carefully hatte seine Erstausstrahlung 2016 landesweit in den chilenischen Kinos. Sein zweiter Film Potential Victim feierte seine Premiere 2018 beim Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in der Sektion Rebels With a Cause. Er ist Mitbegründer der Produktionsfirma AGOSTO Cine, mit der er auch seinen nächsten Filme entwickelt: The Undeniable (in Produktion) und die Dokumentaion Daily Life (ebenfalls in Produktion).

Since last October, when protests sparked in Santiago by increased metro ticket prices, the population has been protesting against president Piñera asking for better social, economical and educational conditions. In facts, the ticket rise was just the last straw that breaks the camel’s back, a symbol of a general malaise that encountered the repressive and violent answer of the government.
In the midst of the complex educational crisis facing Chilean society, four friends live their adolescence between highways and paddocks, on the margins of the city. Towards the end of their basic education, in a school where they learn nothing, a question becomes present: Will they be happy in their future?
The days go by and all that remains for them to do is wait for the classes to end, to go out and have fun with their friends and face together the arrival of a destiny they don’t want.
