Irgendwo in den Karpaten zwischen der Ukraine, der Slowakei und Polen liegt das Dorf Stuzhytsia. Auf Ukrainisch bedeutet der Name des Dorfes so viel wie "kalter Ort".
Der Film erzählt die Geschichten von drei Frauen: der Bäuerin Hanna, der Postfrau Maria und der Biologin Nelya. Mitten in den Bergen müssen sie sich mit sozialer Realität und Einsamkeit auseinandersetzen.
Je kälter der Winter in den Karpaten wird, desto mehr menschliche Wärme findet das Filmteam. In einer winzigen Küche teilt Hanna ihre Einsamkeit mit den Filmemachern, die sie an ihre verstorbenen Söhne erinnern. Im Postamt des Dorfes hat Postfrau Maria weder Briefmarken noch Heizung, aber die Kunden werden mit Schnaps und Liedern erwärmt.
Irgendwo im Wald und in den Höhlen sucht Biologin Nelya nach den Tierexkrementen, die für sie einen Schatz darstellen. Der Film porträtiert einen unbekannten Ort mitten in Europa, an dem die Menschen täglich zwischen Aufbruch und Verbleib entscheiden müssen.

The Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin 2023 will take place from October 25 to 29 with this year’s topic “No time like home”. With this motto we want to invite you to explore together the concept of "home", its spacial and temporal dimensions through Ukrainian cinema. The search for meanings of home as well as questions of one's own origin and belonging determine this year's festival program. Be it personal film stories of directors who fled the war and arrived in Berlin, or cinematic explorations of the 1990s in Ukraine, where most of the contemporary Ukrainian filmmakers grew up. This year we will present for the first time a retrospective program. In cooperation with the Dovzhenko-centre and the German DEFA-Stiftung we will show the Ukrainian Poetic Cinema of the 1960s.
Plot: "Three Women" is a glimpse into a scenic Ukrainian Carpathian village, through the lives of Hanna, Maria, and Nelya. The film captures their everyday chores and ardent longings, exploring themes of identity and community in a changing world. Somewhere in the Carpathians between Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland lies the village of Stuzhytsia. In Ukrainian, the name of the village means something like “cold place”. The film tells the stories of three women: the farmer Hanna, the postwoman Maria and the biologist Nelya. In the middle of the mountains, they have to cope with social reality and loneliness. The colder the Carpathian winter gets, the more human warmth the film team finds. In a tiny kitchen, Hanna shares her loneliness with the filmmakers, who remind her of her deceased sons. In the village's post office, postwoman Maria has neither stamps nor heating, but customers are warmed with liquor and songs. Somewhere in the woods and caves, biologist Nelya looks for the animal droppings that are a treasure to her. The film portrays an unknown place in the middle of Europe, where people have to decide daily between leaving and staying.
